Urquhart Castle
As the Outlander Season 3 premiere gets closer, I get more and more excited. To ease my anticipation angst, I am sharing bits of Scotland with you! We have taken two trips there now, once in the fall of 2016 and then this summer (2017) and I cannot get enough. It is the exact opposite of most normal people's vacation expectations, but I love it. I love the dreary rain, the cloudy skies, the vast mountains full of heath and the crisp, cold air. It is my place :)
It seems that every turn you make in Scotland, you run into a castle. Half are abandoned and the others have been brought back to glorious life. The very best of them are perched right upon beautiful waterways or lochs (lakes). Situated directly upon Loch Ness (Yes, THAT ness) is Urquhart Castle. I did not see any monsters, but Loch Ness is GORGEOUS and goes on and on and on -- a true "finger lake" if there ever was one. I always pictured Nessi's lake as some small pondish lake, but vast sea river might be a better descriptor. In any case, Urquhart has an ideal location and is a stunning ruin.
