Indigo Dyed Scarf DIY

I missed Scarf Week (see all the posts HERE!), but better late than never, right?  Today I am going to show you how to make a super simple, tie-dyed scarf.  This is one of the easiest (and least expensive!) tutorials of the week, so if you are intimidated by the more complex tutorials, start with the scarf!

SUPPLIES:

  • 24"x72" cotton fabric
  • dying container
  • navy fabric dye
  • wax paper
  • gloves and rubbers bands

*When you buy a Maker's Kit, ALL the supplies you need in the exact amounts you need are included. You WILL be paying more than if you buy the ingredients in bulk, but if this is your first foray into lip balm-making, a kit is a fun and easy was to initiate yourself!

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Remove fabric from the bottle and add 2-3 inches of warm water.  Decant fabric dye into water carefully as not to spill.  Wear gloves if you are worried about a mess -- fabric dye is permanent and CAN make a big mess.

2. Roll, fold and tie fabric as you wish.  I started by rolling the upper two corners around a finger and tying into knots with rubberbands.

 I left the bottom of the scarf mainly open for a nice dark indigo and folded the middle randomly. 
 Secure the whole bundle with several more rubberbands.

3. Place tied fabric into the jar. Slowly add water to cover the fabric and seal the jar.

Over a stainless steel sink or old tub, turn the container over and around to fully coat the fabric in dye.

4. Allow the container to sit for 1-2 hours.

5. Remove fabric carefully and with gloves, then rinse in a stainless steel sink to remove the dye. 
Repeat until the water runs clear.  Repeat, repeat, repeat.

6. Dry scarf on a clothesline or other stainproof surface.

7. Wash and dry scarf BY ITSELF in the washer and dryer to fully set the dye. 
The scarf WILL dye anything else you might put in the washer, so make sure to wash and dry it BY ITSELF.
8. Wear, enjoy and wash in medium-dark load laundry as normal. (No reds, No whites!)
